IFG 06-19 Master Thesis: Magnetoelectric material engineering for wireless neural devices

Job description

The group of Neuro-Instructive Materials works in engineering new materials for minimally-invasive, wireless neural devices. Neural implants have a wide range of medical and scientific applications, such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s Disease, neuroprosthetic systems for motor and sensory function recovery, or neural sensors for research into neurobiological behavior. Our group works with nano- and microscale devices that work wirelessly, so that they can be implanted less invasively than a typical neural device. Magnetoelectric (ME) materials, those that couple magnetic fields to electric fields, can allow us to wirelessly generate electric signals using input magnetic signals. This technology could one day provide wireless, externally-controlled neural communication using only injections and magnetic signals, while avoiding surgical intervention.

We are seeking a student to complete a Master’s Thesis project on magnetostrictive and magnetoelectric nanomaterials in the group of Neuro-Instructive Materials. Your role will be to develop methods to analyze magnetostrictive and magnetoelectric materials at the nanoscale. This project will require knowledge of inorganic materials and crystal structure, and a basic understanding of characterization methods such as atomic force microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. This thesis project will serve as a basis for how we characterize these materials, helping us to better understand how they work so that we can design optimal devices in the future.

Several additional positions are open in engineering wireless neural devices within the disciplines of Materials Science, Chemistry, Biology and Electrical Engineering. Please inquire if any of these topics is of interest.

Personal qualification

Interested applicants should be in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a related discipline, and have a willingness to learn new topics to contribute to an interdisciplinary field.

Institute of Functional Interfaces (IFG), the Neuro-Instructive Materials Group. This position will be co-supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Franzreb, the leader of the Department of Bioengineering and Biosystems of the IFG.

Contract Duration

4-6 months according to study regulations. This job may also begin as a part-time (up to 40 hours/month) research assistant (Hiwi) before the student reaches the Thesis portion of their studies.
