PhD candidate (f/m/d) The impact of computer simulations on the epistemic status of LHC Data
The research unit „Epistemology of the LHC“, established by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), investigates a broad variety of themes centering on the experimental and theoretical research at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN from an interdisciplinary perspective that involves problems and methods from philosophy, history, and science studies. The research project at KIT – Institute of Philosophy is “The Impact of Computer Simulations and Machine Learning on the Epistemic Status of LHC Data”. Your work will address the epistemic risks that the involvement of computer simulations may have for particle physics findings. The pursued PhD is within Philosophy, but interdisciplinary cooperation with particle physicists is expected..
You must have a university degree (diploma (Uni)/Master) in the field of philosophy of science, physics, history of science, or science studies. Experience with interdisciplinary cooperation is advantageous
We are looking for a candidate in the field of philosophy of science who is willing to engage in interdisciplinary work and has some relevant experience in one of the complementary disciplines physics, history of science, or science studies.
Salary category 13, depending on the fulfillment of professional and personal requirements.
