IMT 16-18 Bachelor Thesis: Developing a setup for local temperature measurements in micro devices using thermosensitive liquid crystals
Developing experimental methods for local temperature measurements in microfluidics has been crucial for understanding the transport phenomena of fluid flows for various engineering applications. Detecting temperature with high accuracy inside a micro-scale system, where conventional gauges are incompatible, is still quite challenging.
One way of achieving it is using a non-intrusive optical technique called Liquid Crystal Thermography (LCT). It seems promising for a wide range of bio-chemical applications due to its lower cost and ease of use. It combines optical detection of reflected light of thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC) with the temperature of the fluid in which they are applied. To sample the temperature, new approach based on TLCs tracer particles has been developed. TLCs tracer particles, uniformly distributed inside the fluid flow, will not disturb the flow as a coated paint proposed before.
This work is a part of the ‘MIGRATE’ research project and aims to engage a motivated bachelor student in the theoretical and experimental study of LCT. The bachelor thesis will include:
developing LCT experimental setup for temperature measurements inside a single-channel micro-device with a gas flow
TLCs calibration and simple temperature measurements by varying different parameters
improvement of the existing optical system
The experimental setup should include a camera with suitable filters and lenses for optical detection, micro-device with a flexible heater, pumps, thermocouples, light source and acquisition software. The project is very practical and hands-on.
The candidate will get the opportunity to work in a highly motivated international team and will get a precious broad experience.
The progress of the thesis work will be regularly discussed in at least two-weekly meetings within the group.

Strong hands-on experience and instrumentation skills is required
Strong knowledge in optics is necessary
Very good background in fluid mechanics – microfluidics is desirable
Excellent communication skills and business fluent English is required
