IMT 17-18 Master Thesis: Simultaneous local temperature measurements with LCT
Liquid Crystal Thermography (LCT) is a powerful non-intrusive optical technique, developed to measure temperature and velocity of fluids flowing through microfluidic devices. Developing such technique is essential for precise local parameter measurements, especially for various bio-chemical applications where conventional gauges are no longer compatible.
In our lab, at IMT-KIT, we focus mainly on measuring the temperature inside a simple, single-channel micro-device (400 x 400 µm, l ̴ 90 mm) by means of Liquid Crystal Thermography. We use non-encapsulated thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC) (UN R25C10W, Hallcrest) as tracer particles, and optically observe their wavelength reflection as a function of a local fluid temperature that is perceived as colours. A new idea is based on using TLCs as tracer particles uniformly distributed along the gaseous fluid flow. For the first time, we will observe the temperature gradient of a gas flowing along the micro-channel in a device optimized and designed at IMT.
This work is a part of the ‘MIGRATE’ research project and aims to engage a motivated Master student in the theoretical and experimental study of LCT. The master thesis will include:
- optimization of a LCT experimental setup for temperature measurements inside a single-channel micro-device with a gas flow
- TLCs calibration and LCT optimization
- temperature measurements by varying different parameters
- first validation of micro-device prototype
The experimental setup should include a camera with suitable filters and lenses for optical detection, micro-device with a flexible heater, pumps, thermocouples, light source and acquisition software. The project is very practical and hands-on.
The candidate will get the opportunity to work in a highly motivated international team and will get a precious broad experience.
The progress of the thesis work will be regularly discussed in at least two-weekly meetings within the group.

- Strong hands-on experience and instrumentation skills is required
- Strong knowledge in optics is necessary
- Very good background in fluid mechanics – microfluidics is desirable
- Excellent communication skills and business fluent English is required
