IMT 27-18 Bachelor or Master Thesis: Label-free electrochemical sensing of cardiac biomarkers for early diagnosis of heart attacks

Job description

Cardiovascular diseases, such as a heart attack, are one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. The survival rate can be improved if an appropriate treatment is given within the first few critical hours. Consequently, a heart attack detection system for early and fast diagnosis is strongly required for successful treatment. The most reliable indicators for a heart attack are increased levels of cardiac biomarkers. Common methods of detecting cardiac biomarkers include electrochemiluminescence and ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) tests which are expensive and time-consuming. As a first step towards the development of a simple tool for the clinical diagnosis of heart attacks, we aim to develop a low-cost, fast, and ultrasensitive label-free electrochemical biosensor allowing the detection of low concentrations of cardiac biomarkers. Within the thesis, a comprehensive investigation is to be carried out regarding the experimental parameters, including electrode modification, antibody immobilization techniques, experimental conditions (temperature, incubation time, pH value and etc.), the signal generating substrates, and the simplification of the detection procedures. The cardiac biomarker level is monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and, if required, by cyclic voltammetry (CV) to verify the EIS results.

Applications may be submitted in English or German.
