Vacancy No. IMT 34-18
IMT 34-18 Master Thesis: Microscale levitation for contact-free, large motion range miniaturized actuators
Levitation at the microscale is extremely important as it eliminates friction and wear between moving parts in various microsystems. Moreover, by eliminating the mechanical contact, the motion range (stroke) of such micro-actuators can be extended.
In the framework of this project carried out at the Spin and Photon Application (SPA-) Lab at IMT, various miniaturized levitation designs will be investigated and characterized. Furthermore, these designs will be optimized for applications such as large motion range micro-manipulation systems.
The specific tasks within the project will be: (i) design and electromagnetic simulation using COMSOL of the miniaturized levitation systems; (ii) fabrication and laboratory testing of the miniaturized levitation systems; (iii) structure optimization and applications as a contact-free micro-manipulator.
You will be part of a larger team within the SPA-Lab. Within this project, you will use the infrastructure existent at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), i.e., microfabrication facilities, micro-characterisation equipment and computing infrastructure. This is a complete project, offering the possibility to design, fabricate and test the devices, giving you the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.
