IMT 37-18 Master Thesis: Fabrication of carbon microstructures from electrodeposited chitosan
Chitosan is one of important natural biopolymers, which can be found for instance in crab shells, that has gained much interest for biofabrication, such as creating organic and biomolecular patterns on technical surfaces or as a carbon precursor in different applications. Chitosan is a green, renewable, non-toxic and biodegradable long chain linear polysaccharide. Graphitic carbon can be obtained upon heat treatment of chitosan in inert atmosphere at a temperature in between 900 – 1100 °C. The microstructural properties of the graphitic carbon such as porosity and surface area rely on the precursor morphology. The morphology of the chitosan can be tailored during the electrodeposition phase.
The aim of this project is to synthesize carbon films with controlled microstructural properties through pyrolysis of the electrodeposited chitosan films. We want to first synthesize chitosan films with controlled microstructures by varying the process parameters of electrodeposition. The obtained chitosan films will be heat treated in nitrogen/argon environment using different heat treatment recipe to further manipulate the microstructural properties of the carbon films.
You will be integrated in a larger team within the SPA-Lab. Within this project, you will use the infrastructure existent at the Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT), i.e., microfabrication facilities and micro-characterisation equipment. This is a complete project, offering the possibility to fabricate and test the devices, giving you the opportunity to co-author conference and/or journal publications.
