PhD thesis in the frame of a DGF project ”Study on Corrosion Control and Low-Temperature Electrolytes for Low-Cost Na-based Liquid Metal Batteries"
In the frame of a DGF project ”Study on Corrosion Control and Low-Temperature Electrolytes for Low-Cost Na-based Liquid Metal Batteries” we are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) with a background in material science and/or mechanical engineering. The main objective is to develop in cooperation with national and international partners an efficient, long-life and low-cost liquid metal battery system. It will be based on new combinations of liquid metal electrodes (Na//SbSn and Na//BiSb) and on a Na-based salts electrolyte with melting point <450°C, and the solubility of Na in electrolyte <0.5 mol%.
To accomplish the project objective, the candidate (m/f/d) should address both theoretically and experimentally following subjects:
Evaluation of the corrosion mechanism and the development of corrosion resistant materials for all relevant components of the battery. This involves the production of new materials like high entropy alloys, modified surface layers using the GESA process and different types of coatings as well as carrying out corrosion tests and the analysis of as produced and tested materials using metallographic methods. Setting up and operating a test cell in Lab-scale will be the final objective of the work.
You have a master’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics or chemical engineering with a strong interest in materials.
