Vacancy No. 01-2019-IPS PhD Position

01-2019-IPS PhD Position: In situ characterization of multiferroic oxide systems during growth by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with synchrotron radiation

Job description

The goal of the thesis is to gain fundamental understanding of the growth of complex oxides produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), thus enabling growth of multiferroic oxide systems with high scientific and technological relevance.

The Ph.D. candidate will experimentally determine the structure of oxide films as a function of growth parameters, to study their influence on the magnetic and ferroelectric properties. The material systems will comprise both homogeneous multiferroic systems (LuFeO3/Lu2FeO4) and multiferroic sandwiches (BaFe12O19 (BaM)/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BSTO)), i.e. multilayers consisting of ferroelectric and (anti)-ferromagnetic components. The main task is to study the evolution of the crystalline film structure and interface properties of these materials in-situ during growth by applying advanced in-situ x-ray methods with synchrotron radiation, integrated into a dedicated in-situ PLD chamber at KIT. The Ph.D. candidate will have access to unique synchrotron instrumentation for in-situ growth studies and the opportunity of interacting within an international collaboration, participating in experiments with various complementary characterization techniques, at European synchrotron radiation facilities and at leading laboratories for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties measurements. In this way, the thesis will contribute to a deeper understanding of kinetic processes during growth, which may lead to single layers and multilayers with outstanding crystalline and interface qualities, resulting in improved multiferroic properties and promising novel multifunctional devices e.g. for spintronics and microwave techniques. We offer an attractive and modern workplace with access to the excellent facilities at KIT, diverse and responsible tasks, a wide range of advanced training options, supplementary pension with the VBL (Pension Authority for Employees in the Public Service Sector), flexible working-hours, a job ticket (BW) allowance, and a cafeteria/canteen.

Key words: Pulsed laser deposition, multiferroics, in-situ x-ray scattering, synchrotron radiation, electron microscopy, magnetoelectric coupling.
