PhD position in the Cluster of Excellence POLiS: Phase-field theories for post-Li battery intercalation electrodes

The Cluster of Excellence “Post Lithium Energy Storage (POLiS)”, devoted to research on post-Li electrochemical energy storage systems, funded by the German Excellence Strategy at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Ulm University, offers a unique research environment. 

On the long-term perspective, alternatives to lithium (Li) based electrochemical energy storage are needed. Sodium (Na) is one of the most promising alternatives to Li. Materials for Na storage can show complex phase transition behavior which affects strongly performance und degradation. Accounting for this, phase-field theories allow for the coupled simulation of diffusion, temperature, mechanics, and damage in storage materials during operation.   

In this PhD work you will develop phase-field theories for post-Li intercalation host materials. This project is based on previous work for Li and Na intercalation. You will implement the theories in finite element codes, such as COMSOL, deal.ii, or MOOSE. Within POLiS, you will cooperate closely with experimentalists and theoreticians. This includes the definition of the problems to be investigated, import of parameter values, export of simulation results, and exchange on computational methods.

Personal qualification

You hold a very good Master's degree in materials science, engineering science, physics, or technomathematics with an emphasis on computational methods. Knowledge and experience in continuum theories and the non-linear finite element method is desirable.
