13-2019-IMT PhD Position: Development and Characterization of a High-temperature NMR Probehead

Job description

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) analysis of chemical reactions provides several new opportunities for understanding and improvement of catalytic chemical reactions. Process steps can be time-resolved analysed, catalyst-reactant interaction explored and reactive mechanisms examined. It is challenge to adapt the NMR probe heads, which are compact and densely equipped with electronic components, to rough reaction parameters like elevated temperature and pressure.

The project described here aims to develop and experimentally optimize an NMR probe head for a 400/500MHz NMR set-up being able to perform a catalytic chemical reaction at a temperature of around 250°C and a pressure of up to 20 bar (abs). Methods for efficient temperature management (heating, cooling, insulation) as well as mechanical stability of the probe head have to be explored and tested out, before being implemented into a dummy model of the system. Meanwhile, the catalytic reaction shall be explored in a benchtop NMR to obtain rough data about the behaviour as well as the possibilities to measure.

After proof-of-principle and optimization in terms of thermal behaviour and overpressure resistance with the dummy as well as measurement tests with the benchtop NMR, the probe head has to be combined with the catalyst and used for in-situ measurements.

Personal qualification

Possible candidates having a diploma or master in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Chemistry should also have at least basic knowledge in NMR technology. Very good knowledge in thermal management is requested. Knowledge in electronics, measurement and control, micro manufacturing as well as design & simulation of miniaturized heat transfer equipment is mandatory. Candidates should also be business fluent in English and have at least basic knowledge in German. Good communicative skills are mandatory due to the interdisciplinary structure of the project.
