21-2019-IPS PhD Position: Development and Application of Methodology for Synchrotron-Based X-ray Imaging
The goal of this PhD work is the development of methodology for hierarchical synchrotron laminography and its application for 3D in situ studies related to hot topics of materials science, with particular focus on materials and structures for transportation.
The candidate will join the activities of our interdisciplinary team of physicists, computer scientists and researchers in materials and life sciences, jointly developing and applying cutting-edge X-ray imaging methodology both in the laboratory and at synchrotron sources. In particular, the candidate will contribute to extending our worldwide unique portfolio of so-called laminographic 3D imaging. This technique represents a powerful generalization of conventional 3D computed tomography for application to flat and laterally extended objects, with outstanding capabilities for in situ and operando studies of materials and devices under real-world conditions.
The candidate will have the possibility to join the commissioning and first experimental operation of a new, dedicated laminography station which will be delivered to the IPS imaging beamline at the KIT synchrotron source in the second half of 2019. Further, a state-of-the-art X-ray microscopy station and a tube-based X-ray imaging laboratory are available for experiments, both with worldwide unique capabilities. Based on this powerful pool of instrumentation, the thesis work will deal with the implementation of multi-scale (from several hundred millimeters down to tens of nanometers) and multi-contrast (absorption, phase, Bragg diffraction, etc.) imaging modes for in situ laminography. This includes investigating and understanding the physical processes involved in the image contrast formation, and the subsequent derivation of suitable algorithms for 2D/3D image processing and reconstruction.
The PhD work will be largely embedded into our activities within the French-German LAMBDA project, which aims at multi-scale materials science involving the in situ investigation of the damage formation and evolution in flat sheet materials under different loading conditions. This will allow collaboration with one of the world-leading groups regarding materials and structures for transport applications (cars, planes, etc.) and the candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the joint preparation and execution of experiments at KIT and other European synchrotron radiation facilities like the ESRF (Grenoble) and PETRA3 (DESY/Hamburg). Together with experts in this field of materials science, the candidate will play a substantial role in the analysis, interpretation, visualization, and publication of the measured data.

- Excellent master in physics,
- Interest and skills in development and used of complex methodology and Instrumentation,
- Programming skills (advanced in at least one: Matlab, Python, C++, CUDA/OpenCL),
- General IT-affinity, in particular to 2D/3D image data analysis,
- Fluency in both spoken and written English.
