22-2019-IMT PhD Position: Smart Active Micro Damping for Portable Applications

Job description

The drive towards miniaturization and increased functionalities demands for damping solutions compatible to micro technology. At small scale, shape memory alloys (SMAs) are highly promising to absorb vibrational and/or impact energy due to their non-linear stress-strain response and large hysteresis. The dynamic performance of SMA micro damper devices can be adjusted by the di-mensions and surface-to-volume ratio of the active components. Applications are in particular in the field of portable devices, e.g., optical image stabilization in mobile phone cameras to counteract the shake of a human hand.

This interdisciplinary work focuses on damping on a miniature scale covering different fields of ma-terials science, mechanical and electrical engineering. SMA damper devices for 3D vibration control need to be designed and the criteria to harness their maximal damping capacity need to be elabo-rated. For micro fabrication, the IMT operates a state-of-the-art clean room facility. In addition, ad-vanced simulation tools and measurement equipment are available for structural, thermal and me-chanical characterization. The PhD thesis includes the following tasks:

• Characterization of material properties (structure, mechanical, thermal, magnetic)

• Modelling, design and simulation (FEM multiphysics, lumped element modelling)

• Rapid prototyping (optical lithography, 3D printing, laser technology)

• Development of control strategies

• Characterization of demonstrator variants (thermo-mechanical, electrical properties)

• Simulation-based design optimization

Personal qualification

We are looking for ambitious, creative and self-motivated individuals, who like to work within an in-terdisciplinary and international team. Your background covers one or several of the following topics: Materials science, mechanical and electrical engineering, control. Experience in CAD, FEM simulation (Comsol) and MATLAB programming are of advantage.
