Vacancy No. 23-2019

23-2019-IMT PhD Position: project “EPR-on-a-chip”

Job description

The Institute of Microstructure Technology (IMT) at KIT is looking for one PhD candidate in the framework of the BMBF collaborative project “EPR-on-a-chip”. The long-term goal of “EPR-on-a-chip” is to develop and fabricate a prototype of a chip-based electron paramagnetic resonance detector, followed by testing in in-situ, in-operando experimental configurations.

In the framework of “EPR-on-a-chip”, IMT will strongly collaborate the University of Stuttgart and the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, the main task being to address all the challenges which arise from the integration of the EPR detector designed and fabricated by the University of Stuttgart in the in-situ, in-operando experimental set-up existent at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin.

The project involves several aspects of microsystem engineering: MEMS design and micro-fabrication, microfluidics integration for delivery of liquid samples in micro-liter amounts, packaging.

Personal qualification

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with excellent MSc degrees in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Microsystems Engineering, willing to work in the international research environment at IMT/KIT. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in at least three of the following fields:

  • MEMS fabrication using cleanroom processes
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Radio-frequency circuit design and hardware
  • Microfluidics
  • Experience with simulation tools such as COMSOL and/or ADS

Prior experience in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) or electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is considered an important advantage.
