IAI 06-19 Bachelor or Master Thesis: Development of a precision timing module

Job description

The Institute of Automation and Applied Informatics (IAI) develops new methods and tools for the characterization of power gird behavior, modelling and simulation.

For the calibration of our self-developed instruments we regularly use a high precision reference instrument (Zimmer LMG670). Typically reference measurements require the device under test (DUT) and the reference instrument to be synchronized.

The LMGs provide a proprietary interface that allows two LMGs to fully share one time-base. This interface involves multiple binary signals as well as an asynchronous serial connection. The serial interface transports the time stamp information. While it is easy to synchronize the clock of the data acquisition with an arbitrary external source, there is no direct solution available for synchronizing also the timestamp with an external source like GPS or NTP. However, such a synchronization is critical for many applications and therefore a desirable feature to have.

The tasks of this thesis are:

  • Careful analysis of the used time stamp exchange protocol of the LMG,
  • An analysis of the requirements for a timing module regarding hardware and software
  • Development of a concept for a timing module that can interface the LMG with an external time source
  • Implementation (proof of concept) & test
  • The scope of the work is adjustable depending on the desired degree and the personal qualification / experience.
Personal qualification

We are looking for a highly self-motivated student in the field of electrical engineering, computer science or related. This work requires the willingness to tamper with electronics and strong problem solving skills. Knowledge and prior exposition to serial communication concepts, electronics, micro-controllers or FPGAs and clock synchronization strategies will help but are not mandatory.
