PhD position (m/f/x): Dezentralized production of sustainable aviation gasoline
New technologies for decentralized production of sustainable aviation gasoline applicable in remote areas with little infrastructure are the targets for this doctoral research project at the Institute for Micro Process Engineering (IMVT), the project is embedded in the current research focus on renewable power-based fuels and chemicals.
The aim of thesis is to assess the feasibility of decentralized production of lead-free aviation gasoline from carbon dioxide and renewable electrical energy based on the Fischer-Tropsch route. Application in remote air fields in countries like Brazil is in focus where carbon dioxide and water vapor is extracted from ambient air.
The experimental part will be limited to the combination of the Fischer-Tropsch-Synthesis with the hydroprocessing of the primary Fischer-Tropsch product and will focus in particular on the hydroprocessing stage (catalyst selection, process configuration, etc). Through process simulation the extraction of the starting materials carbon dioxide and water from air, the generation of the synthesis gas needed for the Fischer-Tropsch-Synthesis, and the recirculation of unconverted reactants and side products back into the synthesis gas generation shall be considered as well as the economic feasibility.
The research project is connected to several other ongoing projects in the field of renewable power-based fuels at the Institute for Micro Process Engineering and extends these towards high-octane fuels, which are not a target as yet. Moreover, the project is carried out under the umbrella of a larger cooperation between Germany and Brazil in the field of Power-to-X. Research stays in Brazil are part of the project.
You have a university degree (Diploma (Uni) / Master) in chemical engineering, chemistry or process engineering, ideally with experience in process simulation, heterogeneous catalysis; and simulation (MatLab, AspenPlus or similar). We expect excellent writing and oral communication skills in English; basic knowledge of Brazilian/Portuguese would be an advantage. As research stays in Brazil are planned, interest to travel and in Brazilian culture are expected.
