INT 02-19: Bachelor- or Masterthesis: Analysis of surface species in lithium ion battery materials
You will work at the Battery and Electrochemistry Laboratory (BELLA), which is equally funded by BASF SE and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and is part of the BASF scientific network on electrochemistry and batteries. It is located at the Campus North of KIT and is associated with the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT). Research at BELLA combines fundamental work with application-driven projects on battery materials. The equipment of the laboratory allows for a variety of synthetic work, battery assembly, and characterization of both materials and cells.
This research project aims to establish new methods and procedures to characterize the surface properties of cathode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). You will perform experiments such as titrations and preparations for elemental analysis (analytical chemistry) to determine surface species as well as electrochemical characterizations to correlate the surface species on cathode materials to the battery performance. Due to your experience with lab work, you will independently perform these experiments and gather data for scientific publications. You will work side by side with a postdoctoral researcher who is in charge of the project. Further analytical techniques could include automated titrations (Karl Fischer), elemental analysis by ICP-OES and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy, galvanostatic testing of LIBs, and/or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The project is either part of thesis work for a M.Sc. or B.Sc. program or you can apply as a student assistant (“HiWi”).
- Knowledge in the field of chemistry and/or chemical engineering (lab experience)
- Knowledge in the field of analytical chemistry and/or electrochemistry is desirable
- Good English and/or German language skills
- Confident use of Office and Origin Labs software for data analysis and graphing
