Vacancy No. 25-2020-IPS

25-2020-IPS PhD Position: Synchrotron-Based X ray Imaging

Job description

Focus: Laminographic 3D characterization of flat objects for application to hot topics of materials science - multi-scale and in situ.

The Institute for Photon Science and Synchrotron Radiation (IPS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) develops and applies most modern X-ray characterization methodology, both at laboratory and synchrotron radiation sources. Our interdisciplinary and international imaging group is a team of physicists, computer scientists and researchers in materials and life sciences, taking advantage of a large variety of cutting-edge X-ray imaging methodology. In particular, there is a unique portfolio of so-called laminographic 3D imaging techniques available. These represent a powerful generalization of conventional 3D computed tomography for the non-destructive high-resolution characterization of flat and laterally extended objects, with outstanding capabilities for in situ and operando studies of materials and devices under real-world conditions.

In the framework of the German-French LAMBDA-Project, together with one of the world leading groups at MINES ParisTech, the IPS aims at the development and application of novel imaging approaches for multi-scale in situ investigation of the damage formation and evolution in flat sheet materials under different loading conditions.

Job description:

  • Contribution to the commissioning of a new, dedicated laminography station at the KIT synchrotron source
  • Elaboration and implementation of X-ray imaging methodology for 3D in situ laminography, with a focus on multi-scale (mm-µm-nm) and multi-contrast modes.
  • Theoretical investigation of the physical processes involved in the image contrast formation
  • Implementation of suitable algorithms for 2D/3D image processing and data analysis
  • Contribution to the preparation and execution of experiments at KIT and other European synchrotron radiation facilities like the ESRF (Grenoble) and PETRA3 (DESY/Hamburg)
  • Analysis, interpretation, visualization, and publication of the measured data together with the world leading experts on the field
Personal qualification
  • Master in physics or in materials science (with deep knowledge in physics)
  • Experience and skills with complex instrumentation
  • IT-affinity and advanced programming skills (preferably MATLAB, Python, C++, and/or CUDA/OpenCL)
  • Experience with 2D/3D/4D image processing and analysis
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English
