IMT 21-17 \ Internship: Fabrication and characterization of a micro levitation device

Job description

Magnetic levitation is used in applications such as high-speed “MagLev” trains, and magnetic bearings. It allows for the contactless suspension of objects using magnetic force. At our group, we developed a miniaturized device for magnetic levitation featuring wirebonded microcoils. Using high frequency AC current, the device can be used to levitate a flat aluminum disk for a few hundred microns (watch video in the link below).

Recently, we designed a new version of the miniaturized levitation device to simplify the fabrication process, reduce power consumption, and enable optical applications. We are currently seeking a highly motivated student to work on the following:

  • Fabrication of the new design
  • Carry out the electrical characterization measurements
  • Take part in the evaluation of potential optical applications

The work can be extended in the future into a full master thesis, depending on the interest and the work progress.
