IPE 04-21 Internship: A Cloud Architecture for Large-Scale Scientific Experiments
Scientists employ sophisticated IT services to run a large-scale scientific experiment. These services must be highly available, reliable, and scalable, that’s why cloud computing with Linux containers is a popular architecture for these infrastructures. Recent years give a sharp rise to several competing cloud computing platforms differing in performance, maturity, ease of use. We aim to review available solutions and select an optimal platform to rebuild the KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment’s cloud from the bottom up. The announced position aims to study different container-based software stacks for the new cloud. Our main goal is to significantly reduce the operation and development burden while ensuring reliable operation of KATRIN services including uninterrupted data collection from all KATRIN detectors even in cases of hardware failures. Another important aspect is the ability to operate on top of a relatively small cluster using external resources provided by the local High-Performance Computing (HPC) center for spike loads. You will contribute to its design by studying different Kubernetes-based container platforms offered by RedHat, SuSE, Rancher, and other major vendors. At the end of this internship, the student is expected to recommend a containerization software stack starting from the operating system and ending with the container platform sailing through the distributed file system, networking stack, cluster monitoring, and accelerated hardware adoption.
• Excellent knowledge in system administration, particularly Linux, network administration, and scripting
• Familiarity with docker container, cloud technologies, and cloud-based software orchestration platforms
• Experience with distributed file systems and parallel hardware is a plus
