Vacancy No. 07-2021

Ph.D. position (f/m/d): Development of a Na-ion full reference cell within POLIS and practical studies addressing its upscaling and commercialization compared to Li-ion cells

75% Part time

The Cluster of Excellence POLiS (DFG EXC_2154) develops the necessary new battery materials and technology concepts for efficient and sustainable storage of electrical energy. We have identified sustainable alternatives that no longer rely on lithium and other critical materials: We are researching batteries based on sodium, magnesium, calcium, aluminium and chloride ions. These so-called post-lithium batteries have the potential to store more energy, be safer, and offer a more cost-effective, long-term option for mass applications such as stationary and mobile electrochemical storage. With this concept, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Ulm University, the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the University of Giessen have asserted themselves in the Excellence Strategy of the Federal Government and the Länder - as the only German Cluster of Excellence for battery research. POLiS is funded with 47 million euros over seven years.

Job description

One task of the research is to develop a Na-ion-pouch full cells with the aim, to provide a reference cell for POLiS. For this development we are looking for a Ph. D. students at the Institute for Applied Materials – Energy Storage Systems (IAM-ESS).

The work includes all aspects of cell manufacturing, testing and analysis of the results. Particularly the formation process in the full cell should be investigated in more detail, e. g. through analysis of gaseous and liquid components of the electrolyte. Besides, important features of the Na-ion cell will be correlated to a reference Li-ion cell and it should be identified whether Na-ion based cells will meet the requirements in application. All work will be perfromed at the Battery Technology Center at KIT.

We offer you the opportunity to complete the promotion within three years. You will also be a member of the graduate school electrochemical energy storage (GS-EES). During this time, you will work in an interdisciplinary working group at IAM-ESS. You will have access to the excellent research infrastructure and experimental facilities at KIT. You will also collaborate in interdisciplinary fields with project partners within the cluster of excellence POLiS.

As this position is related to the admission to the Graduate School Electrochemical Energy Storage (GS-EES), please also send your application in parallel to the GS-EES via the online application form https://www.celest.de/en/career-support/graduate-school/application

Personal qualification

You have a scientific university degree (Diploma (Uni)/ Master) in chemistry, materials science or similar qualifications. Knowledge in the field of battery storage materials, characterization thereof with suitable analytical methods.and first battery or electrochemical experience are desired. Proficiency in English language (C1) and German language (C1) is mandatory. In addition, we require excellent collaboration skills with internal and external partners.
