Vacancy No. 508/2021
Research Scientist (Postdoc) (f/m/d) chemist or geoscientist
Within the framework of collaboration projects and in the context of the Helmholtz cooperation in the Mt Terri underground laboratory, you will be responsible for planning, setting up and performing diffusion experiments of anionic and cationic radionuclides or homologous tracers in bentonites and natural clay rock. Furthermore, you will be responsible for studies on the diffusive transport of HTO, CI-36, iodide and sorbing tracers, the cross-scale characterization of the structure of clay samples and the setup of an experiment that allows the investigation of diffusion processes under in-situ conditions using a flow cell set-up coupled to a µ-CT system. Furthermore, you will determine effective diffusion coefficients, quantify the effect of heterogeneities on radionuclide transport, and develop a transport model, among other tasks. You will also prepare progress reports on the project work, write manuscripts on the results of the work and publish in (inter-) national journals.
You have a university degree in chemistry or geosciences (diploma or master) with a completed PhD in the field of the behavior of trace substances (tracers, preferably radionuclides) in natural rocks as well as several years of professional experience in the field of geochemistry, clay mineralogy and rock-water interactions. Experience in the application of instrumental spectroscopic and microscopic methods for geoscientific questions is a prerequisite. Personally you convince by very good analytical skills, teamwork ability and very good English skills in word and writing. Experience in the field of radiochemical work and investigations of diffuse transport of trace elements, especially radionuclides, is desirable.
